Although I must say if the scratch is deep enough for your thumbnail to “Click” into you are going to have to spend a really loooonnngggg time performing this operation with a windshield scratch remover
Glass is a HARD material and this job will take a long time
First make sure you are dealing with a scratch! If the windshield is cracked you will see an even depth of crack stopping at the laminate layer. Repairing this sort of damage is next to impossible as even if resin is injected into the damaged area there is a lot of stress at the end of the crack which has a life of it's own!
the crack will want to keep expanding until it reaches the end of the windshield (it will be a very happy crack then — and stop expanding for you). If the above is true for you you REALLY need professional advise. I do realise that if you are restoring an older car replacing the windshield is a very expensive or even impossible option. Please do not make the mistake of trying this yourself with a windshield scratch remover as you might have to dig even deeper int your wallet!

First you will need to buy a glass paste repair kit from wherever you live. The ones I use have several grades of abrasiveness. Using the roughest grade to start with is a little frightening as the surrounding area becomes clouded with very fine scratches.
OH, I almost forgot, when using a windshield scratch remover, you will require an electric air powered drill - I like using a small modellers drill as it is very easy to control and does not leave you totally knackered after 5 minutes use!
You really need a powered system of polishing the scratch — you do not have enough incarnations to even think of doing this operation by hand.
Just keep working on the area with the roughest grade until the scratch is fully removed to the eye.
The temptation here is to get going with the finer grades as soon as possible
If you start too soon with the fine paste you will simply end up wasting a ton af the finer paste. You have to make real sure you remove all traces of the previous scratches. Before you go down the grades.

Sorry, the area will never be as clear ae the surrounding windshield——pretty good but not perfect - although I know of a product called jewelers rouge which is used by ..... you've guessed it - Jewelers! If they can posish diamonds with it, we must be able to get that finish near perfect. . Well all that's the hard way sorry! But it's the best way of doing the job
Another method is to thoroughly clean and apply a windshield repair resin to the scratch. It will sometimes be almost invisible but as there is no real depth of glass to get the resin to adhere to, the scratch will return after a few months because it never really went away— certainly after a summer and a winter you will need to reapply the resin and do the process again.
