An Auto Body Rust Repair or better still...
...preventing an Auto Body Rust Repair on your cars bodywork is one of the most important things you can do for your car.
A rust repair is best avoided, treatment is best handled early before the onset of rust on the car body panels.
what is rust
Rust will eventually totally reduce a cars bodywork back to a charming brown dust!
A plastic trim can be easily replaced but it's another matter to replace several body panels.
Its something I see during the working week several times and luckily you are able to easily prevent a problem from occurring.
OK, what is rust and how can you deal with this common problem and effect an adequate repair?
Well Firstly, they say preventions better than a cure. In the case of corrosion 'they' would be absolutely right!
So, as soon as you see the very smallest spot of bare metal from a chip or scratch please treat it with some auto touch up paint.
Do this straight away before the formation of any light brown scale
It doesn't matter if it's ugly or the wrong colour. Using a simple touch up stick from somewhere like Halfords is absolutely fine
I can always remove touch up paint but I can't always remove a large contaminated area. Although a large hole adjacent to the engine compartment can help with access for servicing! (The engine bays are getting crowded in there nowadays, aren’t they?)
Click here if you really want to read all about how metal corrosion is caused, how rust progresses and why leaving the corrosion to the point of needing a rust repair is best avoided
Because it sometimes eats through the body panel from behind
I'm afraid I can never totally guarantee a rust repair to an
area
contaminated with rust. I feel I would be taking you're
money under
false pretences
However when I am asked to
work on this sort of problem. A corrosion repair would follow these steps
I will try to grind out all the offending rust until I am Back to bare metal The more that's removed the better chance of a successful outcome.
Then I will use finer and finer grades of wet and dry paper to smooth the metal surface ready to apply an automotive filler.
However, if there is any deep ar heavy pitting in the area I will use a chemical rust converter and leave the area for the recommended time before taking further action.
The body panel is now ready to take a body filler. At this point I will complete the repair as I would a normal painted body panel.
