The best car alarm systems are...

revs

...in a continual battle to keep ahead of a more sophisticated thief deternined to beat the best car alarm system.

The best rated car alarm or car alarm systems have to be approved by the insurance companies .

The best car alarm systems have, of necessity, become more and more sophisticated. Having to deal with the increasing prowess of our wonderfully inventive criminal classes´

Some of the techniques employed by the alarm manufacturers have probably caused more animosity between neighbors in city streets than they have dissuaded a determined thief from stealing your brand new pride and joy.

Yes, quite well behaved youths, from around the world, have enjoyed endless hilarity, not to mention an inexpensive evening´s entertainment simply by lifting a car door handle!

Indeed most evenings in London the car alarms would drown out the loudest siren.

The problem for the people who are afflicted by the need to work is the silence in between each repetitive insistent howling--- which lulls you into sleep, just before being shot into wakefulness by the next jarring klaxon!

Then there is that “priceless air pressure sensor idea!”

Invented to detect if the window has been smashed in by the more gormless Neanderthal type of thief - This alarm has to compete with the sound of shattering glass.

Ahh, A warm day is being enjoyed!

And, for those short of air conditioning, the only way to remain cool in the traffic is to crack the window a little to feel some relief from the stifling heat in your 10 mile traffic jam.

And yet another night sleep is cruelly interrupted because, at 3 am, a simple puff of wind has forced its way into four thousand slightly open car windows. !

Let us not forget the supermarket car park where budding musicians wait to here new jingles being produced by 30 cars for every single gust of wind.

The manufacturers do have to keep up with the battle though.

The advent of the electronic car key was fantastic breakthrough for best car alarm systems until some smart individuals realized they could simply stand in any street with a scanner and clone the codes for the entry and ignition.( Be careful as this technique can also be used to open remotely operated garage doors!)

Following this, the next development is for the electronic keys to change to their code between each use so the code for entry and ignition will always be different on any journey.

I am sure the more sophisticated thieves will find a way to break the current best car alarm systems - if they have not already done so.

The sad fact is the more expensive and desirable your car, the more your at risk from being targeted by the sophisticated criminal stealing to sell on.

By far the best new devise at the moment is the GPS tracking system.

This GPS tracker can simply be hidden in the most inaccessible places on your car. And will be transmitting your whereabouts to the police at all times – At the moment I would say this is the best car alarm system protection you have.

  • Because even if your car is stolen. The criminal stealing it is unlikely to damage something he wants to sell.
My only concern is that these criminals seem pretty savvy with modern electronics and will end up scanning any car for the whereabouts of any hidden GPS transmitter.

With the prize becoming richer the thief decides to lift the whole vehicle onto a trailer to dismantle and change the VIN (vehicle identification number) at his “place of work”

The alarm has now evolved, sporting a number of tilt and motion sensors, which only work when they are supposed to. Except in the case of earthquakes, and of course an illegally parked auto being towed away whilst a klaxon screams in protest.

The best car alarm system manufacturers will always have to stay ahead of the game.

The real problem is the joy rider who has no interest financially in your car. And these types typically target older cars where entry is perceived as easier.

Here an immobilizer can really make a difference.

And it will pay to retro fit a good alarm The best of which now need far less wiring than was required in the old days simply requiring fitting of the electronics, the klaxon the sensors and the dash sensor LED

The best car alarm system is the one the insurance companies specify.

In the UK the Thatcham Specification is the industry standard for the best car alarm systems.

The main categories are

  • Thatcham Category 1 The best rated car alarm with the toughest current criteria! An alarm and vehicle engine immobilizer with self powered alarm.
  • Thatcham Category 2 This offers no interior protection! Specifies a two poiont engine immobilizer.
  • Thatcham Category 5 Insurance industry approved GPS tracking, Telematics and the alerting of the vehicle owner that a crime has been committed. Developed to combat the increasingly inventive “key theft” crime of the more tech savvy thief.
  • Thatcham Category Q 5 GPS tracking, filming of theft, vehicle identification systems.
However fitting an aftermarket alarm will require some electrical knowledge as well as a willingness and confidence to remove the interior trim from your vehicle! And the ability to follow a wiring diagram from your chosen manufacturer

Successful detrimming is important in order to hide wiring being discovered.

If you have never detrimmed a vehicle before you should really think about practicing on a wrecked vehicle before starting learning on your own car.

You need to remove plastic plugs that cover the screws on the panels, without damaging the covers or surrounding panels.

Trying to prise these studs open with a small screwdriver will lead to plenty of damage to the interior trim - so much you might stand back and think you had been burgled

My top tip here is to use Blue Tack on the cover and give a quick pull to release it. Or if the plugs are really tight you might try using a hot glue gun to stick a shaft such as an old pencil to the cover . However the best agent to free the glue is acetone and you will need to check this will not destroy the trim before starting this operation. Just try somewhere you will never see to do a test beforehand.

The trim is often held in place by concealed studs these are best released with a spade shaped tool with a “v” ground out of the middle. Even with this detrimming tool some will inevitably break so some spares should be to hand.
