Imagine seeing the two outside edges of the stick are diverged (pushed apart) the technician will now know where to start "working" the metal to bring the lines together the more the dent comes out the straighter the lines become (the more normal the reflection)
When the lines start to converge (come together)you know to stop. Otherwise you will have a handsome looking bump on your car! The trick is, knowing where the end of your tool is in the first place. (Difficult for any of us). And knowing when the dent has reached its best position while at rest.
